The Plattsburgh Police Department currently employs six civilian crossing guards who play an important role in the lives of children who walk or bicycle to school. Crossing Guards have the responsibility of safeguarding children at designated intersections prior to and at the end of the school day. It is not the primary responsibility of Crossing Guards to direct traffic. The primary responsibility of Crossing Guards is to use safe gaps in traffic, or when necessary, to create safe gaps to help the children cross the streets safely.
These men and women put their lives on the line to ensure that our children make it to school or work safely and without incident. While on duty, crossing guards will assist ALL pedestrians crossing the street, not just students. Outfitted with neon green traffic vest and flashing “STOP” signs, crossing guards remind drivers of the presence of pedestrians.
These dedicated men and women brave the various, extreme, North Country weather to ensure the safety of the children as they cross hazardous roadways going to and from school. The Plattsburgh Police Department appreciates these hardworking individuals for their dedication to keeping our children safe.
