The City of Plattsburgh has shared additional details regarding their 2024 Eclipse Viewing Party at City Beach, which will take place 12-5pm on Monday, April 8, 2024.
This event is open to the public, and the City of Plattsburgh is expected to welcome visitors from across the Northeast, as the duration of the totality over Plattsburgh will be one of the longest in New York State, clocking it at 3 minutes and 34 seconds.
The City of Plattsburgh encourages residents to expect increased congestion on the roads due to an increase of visitors to the region. Residents should plan ahead, consider off road modes of transportation such as walking and biking, and have patience as the city welcomes many people to Plattsburgh for the very first time.
Clinton County Public Transit will be offering an "Eclipse Shuttle" on Monday April 8th from 12pm to 2pm and 4pm to 6pm to help people get to various parking and viewing locations. There will be two buses on this route making stops between the Plattsburgh International Airport, Maplefields, Government Center and the City Beach. In preparation for the Viewing Party at the City Beach, the City is implementing additional measures to ensure the event goes smoothly:
- All RVs, tour buses, and large vehicles should park in the Crete Center parking lot (see map below)
- Overnight parking is allowed in the Crete Center parking lot, free of charge, on a first-come-first-served basis
- A dedicated EMERGENCY tent will be staffed by members of the the Plattsburgh City Fire and City of Plattsburgh Police departments
- Staff and EMTs will be on-site to assist the public alongside local law enforcement
- Garbage will be a carry-in carry-out policy; per City policy please do not dispose of household rubbish in city receptacles
“Our team has been looking forward to and planning for this truly unique and awe-inspiring event for more than a year,” said City of Plattsburgh Mayor Rosenquest. “Our city is poised to host guests from around the world to not only experience this once in a lifetime event, but to also enjoy this free public event on our waterfront. This is something we should all take pride in.”
Event organizers anticipate that residents and visitors will also congregate in parks and along the waterfront throughout the City. “We don’t expect crowds will get unruly, however the likelihood that traffic will become an issue is something we’ll be closely monitoring,” said Chief Peter Mitchell, City of Plattsburgh Chief of Police.
