Mayor Wendell K Hughes releases his proposed budget for 2027.
The General Fund Tax Levy is proposed to rise 2%, at the level allowed by New York State’s Tax Cap. The property tax rate changed from $8.748064 per thousand to $8.830526 per thousand. This rate change is less than 1%.
Mayor Hughes said, “This year’s proposed City budget focuses on meeting the needs of our community while maintaining responsible spending and protecting essential public services. Our goal is to make thoughtful investments that strengthen our neighborhoods, improve quality of life, and position Plattsburgh for the future while remaining mindful of the financial pressures facing our taxpayers.
We continue to recognize the importance of maintaining our aging infrastructure, improving sidewalks and trails, and preserving our incredible waterfront as a community asset. We must also continue investing in our parks, recreation programs, and public spaces that bring residents and families together.
A vibrant downtown remains essential to the future of our city. Supporting community events, encouraging visitors, and creating opportunities for people to shop, dine, and gather downtown can help strengthen local businesses and contribute to our overall economic vitality.
Developing this budget requires difficult decisions and cooperation across every department. I appreciate the work of our department heads and city employees in helping develop a responsible spending plan that addresses our current needs while looking toward the future.
The proposed budget now moves to the Common Council for review and consideration. I look forward to working collaboratively with the Council as we evaluate priorities, make necessary adjustments, and develop a final budget that serves the residents and taxpayers of the City of Plattsburgh.”
Mayor Hughes announced the City of Plattsburgh will hold a PUBLIC HEARING on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 5:30 PM in the Common Council Chambers, City Hall to hear public comment regarding the MAYOR'S PROPOSED 2027 BUDGET for the City of Plattsburgh.
The budget can be viewed on the City’s website, www.cityofplattsburgh-ny.gov at the City Clerk’s Office and the Plattsburgh Public Library.
