Phase 2 of the Saranac River Trail Complete
The second phase of the Saranac River Trail and its two new pedestrian bridges across the Saranac River have been completed. The new trail starts at the southern end of Durkee St. before crossing the river and winding around NYSEG’s property on the opposite bank. The trail then hops back over the river via the new Saranac Street Bridge that replaces the former bridge that was removed in 2016 due to structural and safety issues. Phase 2 of the trail connects with Phase 1 on Pine St. and the combined trail now provides a direct pedestrian connection along the river from the center of SUNY’s Plattsburgh campus to the heart of downtown.
On Wednesday November 10th at 2:00PM there will be a soft opening and ribbon cutting of Phase 2 of the Saranac River Trail and pedestrian bridges at the newly constructed bridge at Pine Street and Standish Street near the Plattsburgh Police Department. Media is welcome to attend. The general public can look forward to a larger event in Early Summer 2022 to celebrate the completion of Phase 2 of the trail.
Begun in 2014 and completed at a cost of nearly $4 million, the second phase of the SRT represents a historic investment by the City in its recreational assets and is emblematic of the City’s renewed commitment to both the beautification of its public spaces and the utilization of its natural attractions.
Substantial funding assistance for the project was provided by both the NYS Department of Transportation and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, & Historic Preservation. Together, these two agencies contributed over 50% of the project’s total cost and the City is extremely grateful for their support. Luck Bros. was the City’s primary contractor for the construction work.
City of Plattsburgh Mayor Christopher Rosenquest said, "The Saranac River Trail is another example of why people love living in Plattsburgh and why we have so many visitors coming to our community. This addition not only ties Plattsburgh's South End to Downtown, but it's also an amazing addition to the recreation, parks, and green space portfolio we've started to identify as a priority this year.
“Moving into 2022, we hope to continue the momentum seen this year of the success of this trail, the completion of the Betty Little Arts Park, and the many improvements at the City Beach. And rather than promoting a culture of cutting, this administration continues to promote a culture of investing in quality of life; This is something our city and residents deserve. This is an exciting time to live in the City of Plattsburgh."
